Hi, I’m Alison.
I’m passionate about your health. Your desires. Your goals. Your transformation.
I’m often asked why am I driven to do this?
In my second year of clinical practice I worked with a woman that could barely walk, she had excruciating joint pain, extreme fatigue and had been to 6 different specialists who all told her it was in her head or related to stress. All her blood work was “normal” and there was nothing wrong with her.
This woman was a teacher in her early 40’s with 3 little children to care for. She was active, healthy and happy in her 30’s but something changed 4 years before she came to my office.
We went through her entire health history, symptoms, digestion and hormones. She was divorced, working full time with young children. Her health started to change around the time of the divorce after a trip to Mexico. After functional testing, we found she had a significant hormonal imbalance, lacking the ability to cope and deal with stress and an infection in her digestive tract (but had very minimal signs or symptoms of one).
It frustrated her, that for the last 4 years not one of her doctors had asked about her digestion and hormone levels. She wondered how that could be. I couldn’t answer that. I didn’t understand myself why they couldn’t have put it together.
Guess what? After treatment using a natural approach, she had no pain, amazing energy and had started playing with her kids again. She had her life back.
I have heard hundreds of stories similar to this one and it breaks my heart each time. That is why I have decided to dedicate my life to helping people understand their bodies, how they work and how they can achieve health. I love diving deep, investigating the Root Cause of your health concerns and getting you on the right track. My passion is education and helping you be the best version of yourself.
I am so happy that you’re here. For many of you, exploring my website is the first step on your journey to better health. That journey will be ongoing, as the pieces of the puzzle of your case come together. The most important thing is this first step; that you begin.
Taking the first step to better health can be challenging. Many people who have come to my practice do so in a state of frustration and fatigue. They are frustrated for many reasons: lack of answers, sick of side effects, they know there is more they can do- something that can bring them relief. They know if they can find out WHY they are experiencing this, they can move forward. This is where Naturopathic Medicine and Functional Medicine excel, offering hope.
A Two-Pronged Approach
My approach to everything is a mix of Naturopathic Medicine, as well as Functional Medicine. Functional Medicine takes the stance that medicine needs to be personalized. No two patients are alike. Even a set of identical twins will have had different circumstances in their development that can set them on divergent trajectories. Our genetics, physiology, lifestyle, and environment all form the basis of us. Two people with the same condition or illness can have vastly different causes, symptoms, and treatments.
Whether it is diet related, viral or bacterial, your adrenal function, a hormonal imbalance, inflammation, or your immunity, finding the root of your health concerns and creating a treatment plan unique to you is how we get you feeling great. It is the shift from the disease-centered focus of conventional medical practice to a more holistic, patient-centered approach. Conventional medicine is designed to keep you alive (which of course is very important!), however focusing on the management of symptoms, they fail to identify the root causes of your conditions. This sets you up for a lifetime of medication, poor quality of life and potentially serious side effects and even further potential damage.
I know that my approach to healthcare can be a bit of a left turn from your experiences with conventional medicine, so let’s look at what an appointment with me looks like. When I meet with patients, I spend time listening. I listen to your history and consider what the potential triggers are that have been causing dysfunction. These include your genetic make-up, environmental factors, lifestyle, and anything at all that can or has influenced your long-term health, including complex chronic disease.
Putting the Puzzle Together
The details of your health history are part of an interconnecting web. Everything is a potential clue to your present and future state of health and everything is connected. Your digestion can impact your brain health and your hormones can impact your digestion. It is essential that we go over each aspect of your life; digestion, hormones, sleep, travel, environment, past medical history so that I can begin to untangle that web and make connections so we can find the root cause of your health concerns.
When you’re putting this much trust into a health practitioner, it’s essential to know their qualifications. I am a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and the Clinic Director at the Root of Health in Oakville. I have been a certified Functional Medicine Practitioner from the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) since 2007 and have been a certified Autoimmune Paleo (AIP) practitioner since 2017. I have been a practicing Naturopathic Doctor and Functional Medicine practitioner for over 12 years, and I bring that experience into every case. In the past 7 years, my focus and research has been in helping autoimmune patients and individuals with complex conditions establish root causes and helping them into remission.
My Educational Background
Get ready I’ve been told I’m a perpetual student… I earned my Bachelor of Science, Honours, in Biological Science degree from the University of Guelph with a major in Human Kinetics and Sports Injury Management. Before my journey led me to naturopathic medicine, I received a Bachelor of Education in secondary school mathematics and health education at the University of Exeter, UK, teaching in England and Canada for two and a half years. I knew I wanted something different, though, and so returned to Canada to attend medical school, but not your regular medical school. I wanted to learn proactive medicine so I completed a four-year program in Naturopathic Medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) in Toronto, Ontario.
I knew there was more to learn, and more to offer my future patients, so to further my education and compliment my background in Naturopathic medicine, I delved into the world of integrative and evidence-based medicine. I completed Advanced Training in Applied Functional Medicine, at the Institute of Functional Medicine. I believe in the life-changing effects of Naturopathic Medicine, and so for the last half decade, I have been a representative on the Provincial and National Associations of Naturopathic Doctors.
I am so fortunate to have seen incredible health changes in my patients by using this approach. I invite you to continue your journey to better health with me.
